Has anybody else noticed that over the last few years that the number of Bootleg Numan shows seems to be disappearing ! or am I just looking in the wrong place ?

The performance:
Gary Numan makes his return to Orange County after a seven year hiatus (3 if you count his 2 show run at L.A.'s El Rey Theatre) to a very enthusiastic near capacity crowd at The Observatory. This time one of my favourite guitarists, Mark Gemini-Thwaite, is in tow. Mark has been Peter Murphy's guitarist for the last 7+ years. Mark's impressive resume is a who's-who of alternative bands over the last dozen or so years and includes The Mission, Spear of Destiny, Al Jourgensen, Tricky, Andi Sex Gang, Combichrist and Mob Research.
Gary himself does not disappoint as he lays command over the 900 or so in attendance. Gary's vocals are nearly pitch perfect throughout the performance, though he does stretch for the high notes on the newer "I Am Dust" from the forthcoming "Splinter - Songs From A Broken Mind". Lighting was very effective and came from a series of panels with a series of large round color lights. It's nice to see a return to more conventional lighting as many shows have been awash in LED's for the past dozen or so years. PWEI and Sulfur guitarist Tim Muddiman returns to play bass with Gary as well. The line-up is rounded out by Gary's long term drummer, Richard Beasley and DJ turned producer Ade Fenton on keyboards. The band in all sounded fantastic!
If that weren't enough for you, NIN guitarist Robin Finck spends his "off-night" stage hopping for no less than seven songs with the band. The Wave Goodbye version of "Metal" can be heard here in all its glory once again. What takes place in this Sleepy O.C. suburb is perhaps one of Gary's most blistering and memorable shows. The fact that I was able to capture the entire evening's performance makes up for the fact that I got stopped at the door with my rig for NIN's exclusive Troubadour show the night before. Only to be left to record that "once in a lifetime" show on my Galaxy s4. Oh well, sh*t happens. That show (albeit brickwalled and in mono) can still be found on Ryan's site, "Reflecting In The Chrome."
